Chongqing Weather

In brief, Chongqing weather is as follows: early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter, with a long frost-free period and abundant rainfall. In summer, the temperature can reach up to 40°C (104 F), so Chongqing together with Nanjing and Wuhan are known as the "three furnace cities" in China. Spring and winter are recommended as the optimum time to tour Chongqing.

Every year when spring is yielding to summer there is a great amount of night rain, and thus the city is famous for its "night rain in the Ba Mountains". On average, Chongqing has about 100 foggy days annually, so it is also famous as the 'capital of fog'.

Yangtze River Weather

As the third largest river in the world and with a length of 6,307 kilometers (3,900 miles), the Yangtze River runs through eleven provinces. Situated in the subtropics with latitude of 30 degree north, the weather on Yangtze River features strong wind, humid and less sunshine. The average temperature in July is about 30°C (90F) and lowest in January is about 10°C (50F). In summer, there is often thunder storms and heavy rain. The level of water in the river is higher from July and September, while winter is cold and water level lower.

The average temperature in spring is about 12-18°C and in autumn average temperature is 15-20°C. Because of its temperate climate, April, May, September and October are the best time to take a Yangtze River cruise. These four months are the high season for travel and have higher prices than low season (March, June, July, August and November).

Winter is a good season to travel because of its lower prices and it is less crowded. In addition, scenery at the Three Gorges (the most impressive section of the Yangtze River) is more breathtaking because of the much lower water level.

Yichang Weather

Yichang is in a sub-tropical monsoon zone with four distinct seasons. It enjoys abundant sunshine and rainfall, and the average annual temperature is around 15°C (59F). June and July are the hottest months as well as the plum rain seasons-a period of unsettled weather with frequent, soaking rains and the temperature is about 25°C (95F) on average.

It is not wise to visit in summer; because the plum rain at this season brings great trouble for transportation. The winter is fairly cold, which is not suitable for travel either. The best seasons for visiting are spring and autumn, when the weather in Yichang is favorable and pleasant.

Yichang's warm, moist climate makes it an ideal area for growing oranges which are harvested in August. The Chinese traditional dragon-boat festival is the fifteenth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This festival is more ceremonious here as it is in memory of a great people of this city-Qu Yuan.
